Located in East Frisia Lower Saxony, Ostgroßefehn is a small village along the northern coast of Germany neighboring the Netherlands. A network of canals and locks link the moorlands to the harbors. Horse-drawn barges would haul peatmoss to the nearby ports.
My great-grandfather was a part of the crew which made this particular canal used by regional peat farmers, and formed the spiral mound seen here.
